Georges Méliès – Kinomagier
Live screening on an original silent film projector
Even the Lumière brothers told little stories in their film recordings. However, the first person to truly enchant his audience with the new medium was the theatre illusionist Georges Méliès: In his film studio - the first in France - he dreamed up the most daring scenarios and made dreams come true in the truest sense of the word. With stop tricks, multiple exposures, cross-fades and time-lapse shots, he developed the classic repertoire of analogue film tricks with which he realised his still impressive fireworks of visions. His work is regarded as the pinnacle of the cinema of attractions. For a long time, these films were only available in modest duplications. On this evening, we will show you wonderfully preserved analogue film prints - hand-cranked by collection manager Nikolaus Wostry on a historical projector - including the highlight of the Filmarchiv Austria's rediscovered and restored stencil-coloured version of À LA CONQUÊTE DU POL.
