Gente di rispetto (Die ehrenwerte Gesellschaft)
Because her modern views do not fit into the conservative school system, teacher Elena Bardi (Jennifer O’Neill) is repeatedly reassigned. Upon arriving in the impoverished Sicilian province, she is harassed, but the culprit is found dead the next day in the marketplace, a flower in his mouth. Although the powerful and enigmatic landowner Bellocampo (James Mason) welcomes Elena’s arrival, her progressive plans for the school are met with skepticism. Her affair with a colleague (Franco Nero) must remain a secret, while other aggressors are also found dead: this string of murders, however, grants Elena a status that she uses to push for political reforms.
In this remarkable entry in the wave of Italian political thrillers, Zampa’s late work demonstrates, despite a tendency toward grotesque elements, a darkening of his thematic focus. Through its critical analysis of systemic issues in the face of the Mafia, the film also ties back to Zampa’s early masterpiece *Processo alla città*. (Christoph Huber)
