A journey tracing the profound transformations of a country—Albania—as it shifts from communism to capitalism, from civil war to democracy. In his latest work, Johannes Gierlinger assembles images of history drawn from the written, the constructed, the dreamed, the told, and even the unspoken. In doing so, he also reflects on his own role as an image- and filmmaker. Depending on perspective and context, distortions and fractures become visible, giving rise to new narratives in turn.
Thus, he creates a multilayered and polyphonic archive—one that often tells us less about the past itself and more about our ambivalent relationship to it, revealing how deeply history is woven into the fabric of the present.
