As a young girl, Paula is traumatised by the murder of her aunt, the famous Lady Alquist. Years later, she returns to the empty house of her childhood with her newlywed husband Gregory. While she believes she has left the shadows of the past behind her, strange things start to happen shortly after her arrival - and Paula begins to increasingly doubt her sanity ... While Walter Reisch considered the casting of the two main actors to be a mistake, George Cukor draws on the full potential in this psychological thriller: Looming shadows, flickering lights and billowing wafts of fog exude typical noir charm.
