Garden State

Andrew "Large" Largeman (Zach Braff) is in his mid-twenties, making a living as a television actor in Los Angeles and hasn't seen his home in the Garden State of New Jersey for nine years. Between him and his parents, the psychiatrist Gideon Largeman (Ian Holm), and his wheelchair-bound, depressive mother, lie 3,000 miles - and an icy silence. When his mother dies unexpectedly, it's time for Large to return home. At least for one weekend, where he is not only confronted by his father, but also by old friends like gravedigger Mark (Peter Sarsgaard) - and new acquaintances like Sam (Natalie Portman).

With her warmth and fearlessness, Sam manages to lure Large out of his shell on a journey of self-discovery. After two days, Large has not only buried his mother and old habits, looked into eternal abysses and found love, but also realised that home is not necessarily the place where you are born...
