In the wake of the Heimatfilm wave, Josef von Báky relocated Gerhart Hauptmann's naturalistic drama about a kind-hearted coachman who falls for a malicious maid to the Austrian mountains and bathed it in glistening Agfacolor colours. The result is a ‘banging, leathery piece of alpine gothic with a sly Nadja Tiller and a sleazy Wolfgang Lukschy’, which ‘finally delirious into surreal heights’ (Oliver Nöding) at the fiery finale.
