Führe uns nicht in Versuchung
‘The buried foundations of ethics must be uncovered. When this is done in such a beautiful and artistic way as in the film mentioned above, everyone will get their money's worth,’ wrote Der Filmbote in 1922 about the third film in Goldin's master class, FÜHRE UNS NICHT IN VERSUCHUNG (Lead Us Not Into Temptation). Goldin staged a dense chamber play around the biblical themes of envy, greed, temptation and guilt, the ending of which holds an unexpected twist. Those who wish to can recognise small borrowings from Edgar Allan Poe's ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’. As far as we know, only a single, unfortunately incomplete copy of the film survives in the Library of Congress collection, from which a digital copy was made available to the film archive for restoration.
