From Darkness to Light
THE DAY THE CLOWN CRIED from 1972 remains something of a holy grail in film history. It was a project with which Jerry Lewis, as director and actor, wanted to attempt something completely unexpected: the story of a clown who was supposed to ease the last moments of children in a concentration camp before they were murdered. FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT uses interviews and archive material to trace the ambitious and fatal history of the unfinished film and, with excerpts from material that almost ended up in the bin, gives an impression of Lewis' vision. He never came to terms with his failure: ‘There's not a day in my life when I don't think about it.’
