Frieda
After his fighter plane is shot down in World War II, Robert (David Farrar) returns to his English village with his German wife Frieda (Mai Zetterling), who helped him escape from the Nazis. But starting over is anything but easy. Frieda's brother Richard (Albert Lieven), who suddenly appears and remains steadfastly committed to National Socialism, stirs up mistrust and rejection among the villagers with his fanaticism. Basil Dreaden crafts Frieda into a haunting drama that grapples with a range of prejudices and post-war sentiments. But even ‘Little England’ is exposed by the way he treats his wife. The propaganda and rampant nationalism of the war years did not disappear on their own after the enemy surrendered. Frieda holds up a mirror to us and is as relevant today as ever. (E.S.)
