Traumatised police officer Fisher (Michael Elphick) has retreated to Cairo to process his last case with the help of hypnotherapy. But his former superior asks him to return to Europe to find a serial killer who has strangled and mutilated young girls. Fisher's now disgraced mentor Osborne (Esmond Knight) provisionally closed the case three years ago. So Fisher, trapped in his memories in a somnambulistic state, returns to an expressionistic fantasy Europe. Orwell, Kafka, Godard and Tarkovsky were obviously the intellectual and visual inspiration for von Trier's debut work. Designed as a futuristic horror thriller and film noir homage, filmed in cold sepia blue, Forbrydelsens element laid the foundation for the success of the Danish enfant terrible. (E.S.)
