FOCUS ON Josephine Ahnelt

FromJosephine Ahnelt

Year2025

Duration72min.

Josephine Ahnelt studied at the Friedl Kubelka School for Independent Film and with Harun Farocki at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. With her short films, shot predominantly on Super 8 and 16mm, she occupies a unique position within the Austrian film landscape. At the center of her experimentally documentary works are people in everyday situations, whom the filmmaker approaches with an almost tender empathy. She forgoes linear narrative structures, relying instead on associations and the poetic force of the film material itself. Many of her works grow out of personal experiences and observations, which she transforms into visual reflections. Her films have been shown and awarded at numerous international film festivals; most recently, at the 2025 Diagonale – Festival of Austrian Film, she received the prize for Best Short Documentary Film for lll.
