Four men arrive on a deserted island to collect seaweed. After an argument, a young man falls ill with a fever. Alarmed by the lack of contact, the inhabitants of the neighbouring island launch a rescue mission in the midst of a violent storm. Finis Terrae is the wonderful prelude to the series of films that Epstein shot on the islands of Brittany, his second home in the 1930s. The stories become decidedly secondary; Finis Terrae is above all a visionary masterpiece of rhythmic, powerful, harmonious orchestration of light, windswept landscapes, bodies and water. (C.H.) Jean Epstein: ‘I had come here to film those men who were familiar with the four elements, who fished for seaweed, dried it and burned it; men who stretched their arms into the fire, who sailed before the winds and lay down to sleep wherever they could find a small piece of earth. If there is such a thing as alchemy, the soul of these men would never disappoint us.’
