Femme Fatale
In the ladies' toilets at the Cannes Film Festival, master thief Laure Ash (Rebecca Romijn) strips an actress of her diamond-studded gold clothes during lovemaking in order to exchange them for fake copies. The brazen beginning of Femme Fatale is a declaration of intent: with this pleasurable and unrestrainedly exaggerated erotic thriller, virtuoso suspense stylist Brian De Palma celebrates the means of cinema and the pleasure of watching to the point of parodic excess. The intricate intrigue revolves around the thief, a down-and-out photographer (Antonio Banderas) and the US ambassador to France (Peter Coyote), but the actual leading roles are played by ecstatic suspense montages, eye-catching tracking shots and split-screen effects. A blissful neo-noir apotheosis of all the key themes: Voyeurism, doppelgangers, paranoia, etc. Cinema as a wet dream. (C.H.)
