Faraway, So Close

From Tyrol to Hawaii via Vienna and Paris, these six films feature imaginative filmmakers deploying geography to dramatize states of mind, artists whose journeys are experiments in perception, and pioneers using the latest technology to craft retro-futuristic visions. Existing cultural manifestations are repurposed and/or blended together to yield surprising flavors, but there is also room for “classical” narrative based on character and dialogue. And while a certain “Lynchian” vibe ties together at least two of the works, this is always at the service of personal expression. (ny)
