FANTASY : analog – Die Erfindung des Verderbens (16mm) (dt. Fassung)

FromKarel Zeman

Year1958

Duration83min.

A Czechoslovak science fiction film based on the novel of the same name by Jules Verne. Zeman and his collaborators used the illustrations from the original Jules Verne novels as models for a surrealistic backdrop that came very close to the atmosphere of the literary source. He covered the pictures with a fine network of parallel lines and thus achieved astonishing spatial effects. Any realistic illusion is cancelled out.

The French professor Roch has developed an explosive that can be used to destroy the earth. Roch and his assistant, the engineer Simon Hart, are kidnapped by a gang of pirates and taken to an island with only underwater access. The pirates use a submarine for this purpose. As the pirates convince the naive scientist Roch that his kidnapping is only for the further development of his invention, Roch continues to work on perfecting his weapon. In fact, the pirates want to get their hands on the perfect weapon so that they can carry out their raids with impunity. But Simon Hart recognises the pirates' true motives.
