When Alice shares her secret sexual fantasies with her husband William, the young couple's happy marriage suddenly begins to crack. Disturbed by his wife's confession, William plunges into New York's nightlife. Sexual temptations, possible infidelities and erotic (day)dreams culminate in a visit to an intoxicating orgy.

The last work of the detail-loving master director Stanley Kubrick went beyond all the usual dimensions of film production. The long shooting time and the blending of the film plot with the private reality of the married couple Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise caused just as much of a stir as the explicit sex scenes.

With his adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler's ‘TRAUMNOVELLE’, Kubrick ultimately poses the question: what is a dream, what is reality?
