Year1961

Duration85min.

Gogoberidze made her debut with a generous budget, but the film almost fell victim to censorship. An “unsoviet” cinematic triptych in changing times, an intimate work of visual audacity: three times female desire, three impressive locations. In 1921, Maja, an aristocratic femme fatale, plunges her lover Bondo into ruin on the Black Sea. In the war year 1941, young Nana (teased as a tomboy) falls in love with Levan above the rooftops of Tbilisi. Finally, in 1961, the year the film was made, the successful architect Rusudani meets the painter Zaza on the construction site of the Tbilisi Sports Palace (in reality a project by Gogoberidze's husband), whom she promotes - and desires. The women's views of the (male) world are staged with an experimentally dynamic camera, turning nature and the city into a visual event. The emotional register ranges from the tragic to the occasionally comic, with longing and quiet melancholy defining the basic tone. (Gaby Babić/Barbara Wurm)
