The Warsaw Uprising from August to October 1944 is one of the central events in Polish history and has long been the subject of controversial debate. Andrzej Munk, the prematurely deceased innovator of Polish film, refuses to romanticise hero worship. The symphony becomes a grotesque, his protagonists are either devious womanisers on errands or demoralised officers in a prison camp. (Florian Widegger)
