After Alice (Sandrine Kiberlain) loses her job at a fish factory in northern France, she decides to leave everything behind and start a new life in Lyon. She rents a room at the Hotel Idéal and meets Bruno (Arnaud Giovaninetti), a construction worker. Gradually, the two begin a relationship that balances on the fine line between closeness and distance, having and not having. In her debut film, Laetitia Masson addresses one of the biggest problems of the late 20th century: unemployment. Reminiscent of the compelling sobriety of Ken Loach's films and carried by the intense performances of the actors, Masson's En avoir (ou pas) is a reflection on the limits of human self-determination. Despite the bleak social reality, there remains hope that one is not entirely subject to the constraints of circumstances. (E.S.)
