The rich patron of an industrialist family has lost his memory - and therefore access to his Swiss bank account - in a car accident. In order to activate his memory and get the money, the family dresses up in costumes and re-enacts scenes from his childhood and youth - with success. But with the memories come doubts as to whether his previous life was really the "right" one ... In an absurd mélange of reality and dreams, Saura creates a bitter panorama of the degenerate upper middle classes under the Franco dictatorship. At the already politicised 1970 Berlinale, there was another minor scandal: although selected for the competition, it was blocked at the last minute by the Spanish authorities despite protests from filmmakers and critics and another, rejected film was sent into the race.
