El Eco (The Echo)

FromTatiana Huezo

WithMontserrat Hernández, Luz María Vázquez González, Sarahí Rojas Hernández

Year2023

Duration102min.

In the remote village of El Eco in central Mexico, time seems to have stood still. As in the past, the fields are cultivated there and emotional ties are forged with the farm animals. Everyone helps together in the multi-generational household: The bedridden grandmother is looked after and the maize is harvested, the sheep are shorn and homework is done. Everyday life is mainly done by the women - the men have emigrated to the USA as labour migrants and only sometimes come to visit. This simple life can be experienced and felt through the eyes of the children Montse, Toño, Luzma and Sarahí: playing freely in the meadows, dealing with death, connecting with nature, going to school together - and growing up all too quickly.

In sensitive, poetic images, multi-award-winning director Tatiana Huezo (EL LUGAR MÁS PEQUEÑO, NOCHE DE FUEGO) provides an insight into another world. She interweaves stories, generations, gestures and faces in a wonderfully immersive way. The unpaid work of a secret matriarchy also becomes visible - in a country that is still strongly characterised by patriarchal structures.
