Eine versunkene Welt
Digital restoration: Filmarchiv Austria 2024
With live musical accompaniment by Florian C. Reithner
Convent sister Maria was chosen as the wife of the Grand Duke's son. But Archduke Peter is not prepared to fulfil his father's wishes. His true affection is for the dancer Anny Lind. Once again, the old world rebels against the new. This major production, made by ‘film count’ Alexander Kolowrat-Krakowsky, was filmed on the Adriatic, in Dalmatia and Africa and is based on the Austro-Hungarian emperor Johann Orth, who in 1889 asked to be released from the imperial family in order to set sail for South America on a cargo steamer. The enfant terrible of the Habsburgs has been missing since 1890. The film was awarded first prize at the Concorso Cinematografico Internazionale. The Filmarchiv Austria has now painstakingly restored this jewel on the basis of a viragised original nitrate film print and thus reclaimed it for the big screen. (Ernst Kieninger)
