Eine Reise ins alte Wien
To mark the opening of the new cinema salon in the METRO Kinokulturhaus, the Filmarchiv Austria is presenting a programme that takes us back to the fin de siècle era in Vienna. Around the corner from the METRO, the Cinématographe Lumière made its debut in March 1896. Shortly afterwards, the very first films were shot in Vienna on Austrian soil. Just a few years later, Vienna became the favoured location of the early film documentarists. Everyday life in the capital of the empire was captured on film, as were numerous historical events.
This selected programme brings together some of the most beautiful and vivid examples of the cinematic representation of Vienna from the last years of the Danube Monarchy, which overlapped with the pioneering years of early cinema. The analogue 35 mm prints will be shown on a contemporary film projector equipped with original carbon arc light. The programme will be hosted by Ernst Kieninger and Nikolaus Wostry. (red)
