Ein Mann und eine Frau (Un Homme et un Femme)
Anne and Jean-Louis are both in their mid-thirties. Anne has a young daughter; Jean-Louis has a son of the same age. They have enrolled their children at the same boarding school in Deauville and both live in Paris. One Sunday in December, they visit their children and meet when Anne misses her evening train and Jean-Louis offers her a ride in his car.
During the journey, Anne speaks of her love for her husband, whom she met while he was working as a stuntman on a film set — of his adventurous spirit and boundless enthusiasm. Only at the end of the drive does she confess to Jean-Louis that her husband was killed in an accident during filming. They arrange to travel together again the following weekend to visit their children in Deauville.
There, Jean-Louis reveals that he is a professional racing driver. The two spend a day by the sea with their children and grow closer, and during another drive Jean-Louis admits, in response to Anne’s questions, that he too is widowed. His wife died by suicide following a serious racing accident involving him.
The following week, Anne returns to work on a film while Jean-Louis competes in the Monte Carlo Rally. At the concluding banquet for the race participants, Jean-Louis receives a telegram from Anne declaring her love. He immediately sets off for Paris in his rally car…
