Dwa prokurora (ZWEI STAATSANWÄLTE)
Loznitsa's new film is a subversive courtroom drama set in 1937, when the communist utopia had long since turned into Stalinist terror. A young prosecutor who still believes in the power of the law investigates the case of a prisoner whose letter alerts him to an injustice. With each step, the full extent of a system that allows no truth and a society permeated by fear is revealed. Barren backdrops and precise images create an atmosphere as suffocating as the bureaucracy depicted – only occasionally broken up by black humour. A historical scenario becomes a universal narrative: relevant wherever authoritarian structures determine what is right and what is reality.
