Duo luo tian shi (Fallen Angels)
The nocturnal counterpart to *Chungking Express*. In this neo-noir killer comedy, two storylines intertwine into an experimental drama of loneliness. Five protagonists wander through a color symphony on the nighttime side of Hong Kong in search of love: a melancholic hitman, his secretly in-love agent, and his ex-girlfriend on one side. A mute small-time criminal who lives with his father, and the talkative Cherry on the other. Christopher Doyle's camera blends punk and plastic with video avant-garde, creating a visual rush full of magnetic pull through filters and wide-angle lenses. Frankie Chan's pastiche of trip-hop and pop songs pulses through this urban fairytale with the rhythm of lostness. (Tom Waibel)
