Drinnen und draußen
A budding young social worker has to look after a hospitalised patient in a (closed) psychiatric ward. He has been in the institution for 10 years with a dubious diagnosis and is fighting to finally be released so that he can return to his mother. But she is strictly against it.
Most of the film was originally shot in the Gugging psychiatric hospital and was made in the context of the debate about reforming and opening up psychiatry along the lines of Franco Basaglia in Italy.
‘The film has those qualities that most Austrian films lack, namely a formal rigour and certainty that dispenses with all the gimmicks and intrusiveness of camerawork.’
Hans Hurch, DER FALTER
‘Film masterpiece with only one million shillings’
