Of the countless film adaptations of the famous novel about the scientist with a split personality, this one stands out: in keeping with the original, stylist Mamoulian goes wild in his daring production for 1931, experimenting with light and shadow, split screens and a subjective camera, while Fredric March - awarded an Oscar - embodies the transformation from Nobel man to Neanderthal man with shattering disturbance.
