Dong fang san xia (The Heroic Trio)
A vaguely futuristic Hong Kong is shaken by a bizarre series of kidnappings: babies disappear inexplicably without a trace. The inspector in charge is in the dark, but his wife (Anita Mui) intervenes in her secret identity as the acrobatic heroine ‘Wonder Woman’; but even she is able to stand up to the invisible kidnapper (Michelle Yeoh). A third superwoman, bounty hunter Chat (Maggie Cheung), tips the scales. Long before Johnnie To established himself as Hong Kong's flagship genre stylist, he created an Asian export hit of the nineties with this gleefully apocalyptic rollercoaster ride through the breakneck and breathtaking action choreography of his colleague Ching Siu-tung (A Chinese Ghost Story) - with a licence for pure madness: the powerful, costumed female trio makes the subsequent western comic fantasy wave look old in retrospect.
