The feature film debut of one of the most fascinating voices in contemporary cinema. The “documentary” beginning of this journey from Bangkok southward soon gives way to an unpredictable hybrid of fact, fiction, and fantasy emerging from the collective unconscious: along the way, the director hears a story that he allows the other people he meets to spin out as they please. The original title translates to “Heavenly Flower in the Devil’s Hand”—and Dokfah, the heavenly flower, is also the name of the woman who appears in the wildly mutating story-within-a-story as the teacher of a paraplegic boy. The film’s title would fit an archetypal Thai melodrama, but in the hands of Weerasethakul, the most inventive reinterpreter of the national tradition, it becomes much more: a musical performance that evolves into a school play, which in turn becomes a sign-language dialogue. A unique film. (C.H.)
