Inspired by the protest strategy of the same name—“an action aimed at achieving a goal immediately and by the most effective means”—Direct Action is a contemporary portrait of a vibrant militant activist community in France. The film follows a rural collective of 150 people that survived several violent eviction attempts by the French state, successfully prevented an international airport expansion project in Brittany, created an autonomous zone from 2012 to 2018, and three years later evolved into a significant environmental movement.

Through its collaborative and uniquely immersive observational approach, Direct Action documents the daily life of a diverse ecosystem of activists, squatters, anarchists, farmers, and individuals branded “eco-terrorists” by the government. The film seeks to better understand how the success of radical protest movements can carve a path through the climate crisis—and perhaps even out of it.

Austrian premiere at the Festival du Film Francophone – in cinemas 2025.
