During a shootout, contract killer Ah Jong blinds nightclub singer Jennie with the muzzle flash of his gun. Wracked by guilt, Ah Jong becomes the blind beauty's guardian angel - so much so that he wants to finance an eye operation for her. But to do so, he would have to take up arms once again ... John Woo's international breakthrough film brings together all the themes and forms that have been associated with his work ever since: Men hold pistols to each other's skulls, pigeons swoop at every opportunity, changes of perspective are celebrated in montage excesses, shootouts resemble operatic duets. The Killer is a deeply Cantonese melodrama about honour among men and the enigma of love, in which Jean-Pierre Melville is wildly crossed with Sam Peckinpah and Chang Cheh reborn under the sign of his father Martin Scorsese. A great film for which time has been kind. (Olaf Möller)
