Die Welt dreht sich verkehrt
An Austrian alienation. In an absolutely artificial studio world, the country's history is filmed as an escapist dream backdrop. The transfiguration of history comes to a head in the character Franz Xaver Pomeisl (Hans Moser). Pomeisl's basic attitude is world-weariness; after a few quarters, even past wars seem better to him than the bomb-damaged Vienna of 1946. Moser's tour d'horizon is accompanied by numerous role changes. In the very first episode (Congress of Vienna), he is mistaken for a prince as a minor civil servant and in this double role he alternates between ruler and subject. The film is charged with such historical travesties and ironic refractions of the past, with the tongue-in-cheek assertion that history is what perhaps never was - and perhaps it was all just a bad dream.
