Die Stunde Null

FromEdgar Reitz

WithKai Taschner, Herbert Weißbach

Year1977

Duration108min.

LanguageGerman

The war is over. As the Americans are just leaving a village near Leipzig, the Russians move in. Caught in the middle is Joschi, who idolizes the U.S. Army and is searching for the hiding place of a Nazi cash box. Helping him is Isa, with whom Joschi falls in love. They discover the “treasure” and are forced to flee from the Russians. But they find no refuge with the Americans either.

Edgar Reitz’s atmospherically dense film about Germany in the immediate aftermath of World War II portrays a country in limbo, with people torn between hope and fear, ending and new beginning.
