In the early 1920s, a US entrepreneur travels to the “wild” Soviet Union to do business – accompanied by a cowboy as a precaution – but finds himself having to revise many of his preconceptions... Silent film concert with Günther A. Buchwald (piano).
Little known, but all the more amusing for it, is the silent film comedy “The Strange Adventures of Mr. West in the Land of the Bolsheviks” by Lev Kuleshov from 1924: US Senator John F. West travels to the Soviet Union expecting to find fur-clad savages called Bolsheviks. For protection, he takes a cowboy with a lasso with him. Nevertheless, in Moscow he falls into the hands of a gang of gangsters who want to blackmail him under false pretenses... Russian film pioneer Leo Kuleshov delivers pure propaganda, but in a very amusing way. His innovative image compositions and editing techniques even inspired Alfred Hitchcock.
