DIE PUPPE / DIE AUSTERNPRINZESSIN
19 Dec, 18:00. With live musical accompaniment by Gerhard Gruber
A Lubitsch-Oswalda double programme from what was probably the most productive year in the director's career: in DIE PUPPE, the young nephew of a baron is finally supposed to get married, but he doesn't feel up to the ‘weaker sex’ and flees to a monastery. The monks advise him to try a trick - but never underestimate the cunning of women. A papier-mâché doll leads him around by the nose and explores gender boundaries along the way. DIE AUSTERNPRINZESSIN was Lubitsch's ‘first comedy with a definitive style’. The story of an impetuous millionaire's daughter who, in her search for the prince, unwittingly marries a servant and thus triggers all kinds of turbulence, provides another fast-paced sample of his skills.
