Die Patriotin (The Patriot) is an auteur film centred on Gabi Teichert (Hannelore Hoger), a history teacher who is dissatisfied with the official curriculum and sets out in search of the ‘true causes’ of Germany's past. Between archaeology, history lessons and dream sequences, Kluge combines documentary fragments, historical quotations and fictional scenes to create a critical reflection on memory, education and national identity. The film encourages viewers to think about the political responsibility of historiography and is considered a key work of New German Cinema. (C.S.)
