Die Mörder sind unter uns
1945, Berlin lies in ruins. A young woman returning from a concentration camp meets a traumatised military doctor who tries to suppress his experiences with alcohol. The two people, both scarred by the war, cannot believe that a former captain, the mastermind of a massacre in 1942, is now leading a normal life again as a respected businessman. For the sake of justice, the doctor considers a momentous step of private revenge. The woman, however, with her eye on a new beginning and not carrying on as before, pleads that even if the murderers are among us, it cannot be a licence to become a murderer. DEFA's first German post-war film, the first film about ruins set against the backdrop of urban ruins, the first leading role for world star Hildegard Knef. (Brigitte Mayr)
