When the Americans unexpectedly withdrew from Afghanistan in the summer of 2021 and the Taliban returned to power there, Manizha Bakhtari was ambassador to Vienna. Since then, at least on paper, she has represented a country whose government she does not support. Although the situation has become increasingly complicated, she refuses to be silenced in her fight for the rights of Afghan women and girls, true to her motto ‘peace is not the absence of war, but the presence of justice’. Close to its protagonist, the film conveys her tremendous courage and commitment and shows a woman who is deeply connected to her country and her people and yet so far removed from them.
