Karl Ignaz Hennetmair not only sold Thomas Bernhard three houses as a ‘reality dealer’, he also supported the writer, who was ‘unfit for life’ in all practical matters. Hennetmair tells of the unconventional everyday life of the writer in a chatty tone and without being asked, almost like a ‘home story’ about this strange male friendship. Hennetmair also secretly kept a diary of his dealings with Thomas Bernhard for over a year. In the end, the two men fell out irreconcilably. After the writer's death, Hennetmair published the diary. It became a bestseller and he also managed to make an appearance on the Harald Schmidt show.
