Die Geschichte der Dienerin
In a futuristic regime, women are assigned to reproduce as ‘servants’. First film adaptation of the world bestseller ‘The Handmaid's Tale’ by Margaret Atwood.
In the not-too-distant future, in the Republic of Gilead (part of the former USA), people have become largely infertile due to catastrophes. New life must be ‘bred’ by any means necessary, and so women are forced into rigid roles and divided into classes in a totalitarian, Christian fundamentalist system. Women of childbearing age are re-educated to become ‘handmaidens’ of the powerful. They are expected to put their bodies at the disposal of the leaders of society, the commanders, and bear their children instead of their wives. If there are no offspring, the handmaidens face danger to life and limb.
Kate, who was enslaved as a servant after an unsuccessful escape attempt, joins the household of Commander Fred and his wife Serena Joy. While she has to fulfil her role as a maid, she desperately tries to regain her life and becomes entangled in an inscrutable web of power games, trust and betrayal. (DFF)
