Vienna at the time of inflation. In Melchiorgasse, luxury and misery go hand in hand. The butcher only sells his goods in exchange for sexual services. The dressmaker works as a procuress. A court councillor takes early retirement and soon loses his entire fortune through speculation, and his daughter ends up in a brothel ... The only film that the two silent film stars Asta Nielsen and Greta Garbo made together is one of the great classics of German silent film. While the film was censored for its unsparing portrayal of harsh conditions, its director, G. W. Pabst, became instantly famous as the most important representative of New Objectivity.
