Ruzowitzky's DIE FÄLSCHER is a film about a chapter of German history that has received little attention to date. In the final years of the war, the Nazi regime decided to counterfeit pounds and dollars and to flood the enemy economy with millions of dollars? worth of this currency. During "Operation Bernhard" from 1942 to 1945, 144 inmates were forced to counterfeit foreign banknotes in a secluded part of Sachsenhausen concentration camp. These prisoners, so "valuable" because of their skills, were given enough to eat and slept in soft beds. It was the largest counterfeiting operation in history.
