Die Ermittlung
Gala screening organized by F & M and Viennale
January 27 marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, where over a million people lost their lives. With DIE ERMITTLUNG, the film adaptation of Peter Weiss' 1965 play of the same name, RP Kahl stages the protocols and recordings from the first Frankfurt Auschwitz trial for the cinema. Through a cleverly reduced use of means, he enables a factual and yet deeply shocking approach to coming to terms with the incomprehensible crimes against humanity.
Weiss describes the Auschwitz trials, at which he himself was present, on the basis of protocols and his own notes. In this “oratorio in eleven songs”, witnesses and judges, defense attorneys and prosecutors appear, bringing to life the horror of what happened in Auschwitz. As statements in court, they are characterized by objectivity and - on the side of the accused - an inhuman coldness and arrogance. They bear deeply shocking witness to a barbaric crime of unimaginable proportions.
With his well thought-out staging concept, RP Kahl contributes to a change in the cinematic culture of remembrance and opens up a new approach to this darkest chapter of German history through a factual portrayal of what is actually incomprehensible.
The screening will be followed by an audience discussion with director RP Kahl, actor Karl Markovics and other guests.
