DIE BONNARDS: MALEN UND LIEBEN
This French biopic delves into the decades-long relationship between the painter Pierre Bonnard and his partner and muse Marthe de Méligny, which was characterized by conflict but was also a central element of Bonnard's art.
Artist biography about the life of the painter Pierre Bonnard and his muse and wife Marthe de Méligny: Less well-known than other artists of his time, Pierre Bonnard is nevertheless regarded today as one of the greatest painters of the early 20th century. Known as the “painter of happiness”, he immortalized rural and urban scenes as well as bodies and faces on his colourful canvases, in particular that of Marthe, his partner and muse, who also became a painter. When the two met, Maria Boursin, alias Marthe de Méligny, posed as an impoverished Italian aristocrat. They fall passionately in love with each other. Martin Provost's film traces their lives over five decades - from their first meeting to Marthe's death in 1942.
