Die Bologna-Entführung

In 1858, the Pope's soldiers storm the house of the Mortara family in the Jewish quarter of Bologna. On the cardinal's orders, they wanted to take Edgardo, their seven-year-old son. The child is said to have been secretly baptized as a baby by his nurse, and the papal law is indisputable: he must receive a Catholic education. Edgardo's devastated parents do everything they can to get their son back. Supported by public opinion in liberal Italy and the international Jewish community, the Mortaras' struggle quickly takes on a political dimension. But the Church and the Pope refuse to return the child in order to consolidate their increasingly shaky power...
