In Die Artisten in der Zirkuskuppel (The Artists in the Circus Dome), circus director Leni Peickert dreams of a new, political circus – a place of enlightenment and engagement. But her idealistic vision fails in the face of the realities of economics, media and power. Alexander Kluge tells this story in a mixture of dramatised scenes, documents, interviews and reflections, which is also a symbol of post-war West German society. The film asks how art can be socially effective without bowing to spectacle. With its formal rigour and intellectual irony, Kluge's work became a central contribution to New German Cinema during the student protest movement. The film won the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival in 1968. Two years earlier, the film Abschied von Gestern (Farewell to Yesterday) won the Silver Lion, the first award for a German film since the end of the war in 1945. (C.S.)
