Yoji feels alone and unfulfilled. Not only in his job as a salaryman, but also at home, after his divorce he is faced with a void that he doesn't really know how to fill. With his mother's health declining and his neighbor dying alone, Yoji is confronted with the question of what makes his life worth living and whether it is important to have witnesses to one's own existence. When his mother dies, he gives in to an impulse and follows the Filipino nurse Minerva to Manila, the city where “no one is ever alone.” He quickly becomes part of Minerva's family, befriending her daughter and brother, and soon learns a different way of life and togetherness, but also that one cannot simply withdraw from this sense of belonging.
