Di Renjie (Detetive Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame)
In the year 689, Wu Zetian (Carina Lau) sets out to become the first Empress of China, against the resistance of the Tang Dynasty court aristocracy. A massive statue bearing her likeness is to be erected as a wonder of the world, but when one of the architects bursts into flames, she releases her former political adversary, Di Renjie (Andy Lau), at the advice of an oracle, to solve the mystery. A fantastic comeback film by Tsui Hark, who channels the surreal energy and inventive visual style of his 1980s martial arts epics into the digital era. At the center is a sort of Chinese Sherlock Holmes: As "Judge Di," the historically documented official Di Renjie became the hero of numerous crime mysteries in literature and film, but none are as unbelievable as the case he must solve in Tsui's spectacle, filled with fire beetles, talking deer, and stunning fight choreography by Sammo Hung.
