Despite All This
Amidst the destruction in northern Syria, a remarkable form of hope is emerging. Rojava—officially the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria—is considered a unique political experiment in gender politics. Progressive measures promote women's participation in government, education, and defense—an extraordinary break with the region's traditionally patriarchal norms. At the same time, this autonomous region is constantly exposed to military offensives, political instability, and threats from extremist groups, making the pursuit of women's rights both revolutionary and precarious.
In this context, women are asserting their independence with extraordinary determination: They are founding villages, teaching children, running workshops, and defending a vision of freedom and equality. Director Robert Krieg, known for his documentaries on social justice and West Asian issues, accompanies their daily lives as they navigate between survival and political awakening.
The protagonists include the digitally savvy Argin, the craftswoman Jehan, the single mother Delal, the versatile Sidan, the Taekwondo teacher Ghoufran, and the deaf silk embroiderer Hiba. Each of them forges her own path, uses her skills, and overcomes personal and societal obstacles – thus demonstrating how individual resilience intervenes in broader societal transformation processes.
